Linux Hosting vs. Windows Hosting

by myhosting.com on August 20, 2009

You are going to build a web site and have decided where to host it. And ta-daaa! Your hosting company is asking you a tough question: “Choose your web hosting platform: Linux or Windows?”

Don’t panic! Here are the basics…

There are some differences between two platforms, such as security features, functionality and of course supported scripting languages. Microsoft has its own operating system with associated licensing fees, and Linux is an open source operating system that is often free. But that doesn’t necessarily mean a Windows hosting package costs more. It is sometimes equivalent in price or even more affordable than an equivalent Linux hosting package.

And you DON’T have to choose Windows platform just because your PC runs on Windows or vice versa. Accessing to your web hosting account is usually through FTP or Control Panel, and can be done across platforms. Some commands may be different in Linux, but that’s one of the only major differences.

The choice comes do what you want to do with your web site. The majority of web features run on both platforms. If your site is a Basic HTML site with nothing fancy, it doesn’t matter what platform it is on. Other scripting tools like PHP work great on both platforms. But if you are going to create your website using ASP, FrontPage, Web Expressions, .NET, Access, Microsoft SQL or another Microsoft based technologies, you need to use a Windows host. Or if you are running a website based on applications like Perl or MySQL, then you may be better off on the Linux platofrm. In terms of performance there is no noticeable difference between two platforms. Both  are continuously improving their infrastructure and getting better every day.

If you still can’t decide, you can read our Windows vs. Linux platform comparison. But you can also get the best of both worlds with myhosting.com, with a Windows and Linux platform included with every Premium web hosting plan.
