Today, we are celebrating Blog Action Day – an annual event held every October 15, uniting the world’s bloggers by posting about the same issue of global importance on the same day. This year’s issue is Climate Change.
As you know, the world is changing rapidly. New technological developments totally affect our climate. It’s safe to assume everyone knows what global warming is and we’ve all heard the doomsday-like scenarios about our future. However, we can slow down mitigate this with a little effort, smart choices and conscious changes from both regular people and corporations alike – even hosting companies.
First of all, Mother Nature needs our help to protect her. Generally, fossil based fuels are used to generate electricity; however, they produce lots of CO2 gas, which is harmful because it is a leading cause of global warming. It is possible to reduce CO2 emissions by using solar panels, wind panels and water based cooling instead of fossil based fuels.
Technological recycling is also a way to protect nature. Old machines, computers and servers use more energy to run and therefore contribute to higher CO2 emissions. At myhosting.com, we are aware of this issue and make conscious efforts to always use the latest technology and choose only the most efficient and energy saving hardware.
You can do your part too. Did you know that old, dumped machines contain lead, cadmium, barium and mercury? Far too toxic for a landfill. IBM has a service in which they will buy your old machine and recycle it appropriately.
At the end of the day, all computers – new or old – generate CO2 and contain toxic materials. This is why I suggest using virtual servers as often as possible. With Virtual Servers you can fit multiple virtual computers on to one set of physical hardware, thus reducing your energy footprint as well as saving money on hardware at the same time.If you’re not already aware, check out our virtual server hosting services.
Lastly, there are new developments on the data center side. Most new data centers are being created to be more eco-friendly. For example, higher walls and specific server arrangements enable better airflow and keep servers cooler with less energy consumption. Intel and T- systems unveiled research last month about more eco-friendly data centers.
As a Green-Minded company, increasing awareness about climate change is important to us. I hope you’ve learned more about how we try to do our part, and how you can too. Be more sensitive about global warming, it’s our future too!
