Most blogs have a central theme that runs through it, for instance some are about Dalmatians, hip-hop music, or cooking. If your blog is going to be read only by close friends and acquaintances, you may wish to use a highly personal theme instead. If you intend to use the blog to promote your business, you will of course need to find a theme that is related to the business. While you may know a lot about Dalmatians, since the passion of your life is “Dotty,” but you are in the kitchen design business, it would make no sense for you to choose Dalmatians as your theme.
Has your wife or significant other always said to you “Once you start talking about designs, no one can make you quiet!” If so, then you have enough passion about your business so that you can find something to talk about for months and months on end, and what you say will be interesting to your readers.
Various trends that have just come onto the market that seem to be able to have longetivity to them may give you ideas for your blog theme. Just the reverse is true, old trite and hackneyed subjects will not attract anyone to your blog. What if you were, for instance, to blog about pet rocks? Most people today do not even know what they are.
Any blog that will be turned into an entrepreneurial one, where you are going to have links to a business in the blog means that money is more the passion involved at the time. However, if the blog is solely created to discuss why you love Dalmatians, then that theme is correct for you.
The problem with some entrepreneurial blogs is that they do not lend themselves well to the general intent of a blog, which is to have a blog that can go on and on into almost perpetuity because the subject matter is too finite. Thus, be sure that the theme for your blog is not limited, but is actually expandable into a divergence of areas that can maintain the interest of readers, and more importantly maintain the interest of the author, you.
You may be surprised to learn that even the themes that are limited to fewer people attract the most. This is because those people find it difficult to find blogs that contain that subject matter.

I definitely expected this to be about themes as in designs not as in topics but even with my confusion it was a good article. Picking a good topic is really important because it will be the basis of your writing advertising and everything else.
If you are passionate about it then maintaining the site will be a lot easier than if you are just doing it for cash also.
Choosing a topic or theme is very important since this will decide what kind of content and advertising you put up. Picking something you enjoy learning a bit about, or already know about is the best thing to do. Avoid things that make you want to bang your head against a wall.
This is a really good thing to point out, because I really think that all blogs should have one theme and no more.
Multi topic blogs are just too messy and feel half hearted to me.
If you have to have a multi topic blog, at least do it under one site with sub domains or pages set up for different topics.
Dalmation lovers might not want to read about the most recent soccer news if you know what I mean.
Hi, thanks for the info. I linked to your blog yesterday:
I also agree that selecting a single theme is the way to go. It will help you maintain your followers. If you’re writing about cooking and dogs, then those who’re passionate about cooking will probably avoid your blog as they’ll want to read blogs devoted only to cooking. Same with those dog-lovers out there.
You must like dalmatians. You seem to use them often in post examples. LOL
