Blogs and Search Engine Optimization – Understanding How They Work in Tandem

by Melissa Smich on March 3, 2010

The concept of blogging is in vogue today. Every other person in the world wants to start a blog so they can let the world know what they are thinking. I wouldn’t be surprised if in a few months the number of blogs outnumber the websites on the internet. While some blogs are filled with information rich content, there are many others that are absolutely meaningless. The increase in the number of blogs only translates into tougher competition for the ones with information rich content that customers need to know. If your blog needs to get that visibility and reach out to the masses, then, you have to include the principles and strategies of search engine optimization.

Today, blogs and search engine optimization work hand in hand and ensure good information on the topics internet users are interested in reaches them. Gone are the days when the concept of SEO was limited just to websites. Today, many blogs have much better information on certain topics as compared to websites and it is imperative they use SEO to get a higher ranking. Let us take a quick look at how blogs and search engine optimization can work in tandem.

Search engine optimization for blogs can be categorized into two distinct categories which are onsite techniques and offsite techniques. You cannot have control over the offsite techniques because it is more dependent on the website or page or another blog that is establishing a link to your blog. Onsite techniques are the ones you can have better control over because they are in your hands. It is important to have an understanding of how these techniques work, especially the onsite techniques, in order to gain visibility.

The first onsite SEO strategy is, obviously, targeting keywords which most users commonly look out for. There are some keywords that have millions of pages of content written about them, but there are some other keywords which are highly searched for, but lack enough content. Choose the ones that fall in the latter category. Not only will you be talking about a challenging niche, your blog will also have a higher chance of being visited. Use these keywords liberally throughout the article, but remember to avoid spamming them; which means, write content where keywords can fit in easily rather than content where you will have insert the keyword forcibly, thus lowering the quality of the content. The places in the article where you should mandatorily include the keywords you have selected are the title of the article, outbound links, Meta tags, image tags and heading tags. While the preferred keyword density is in the range of 1% to 5%, there are some people who go up to 20% which ultimately results in ruining the content, thanks to the keyword density.

When trying to understand the working of blogs and search engine optimization, an important aspect we have to talk about is the site design. Site design, just like SEO, has now moved beyond just websites. You will have to ensure that it is easy to search for information on your blog. Don’t use excessive graphics since they can increase the page load time. Keep the design simple and browser friendly. Avoid dead links that take the user nowhere. These simple things if kept in mind while designing your blog will enable easy indexation by the search engines.

Understand the theory of themed sites. Writing a large number of articles on a particular theme is another way of interlinking blogs and search engine optimization. Pick a niche that you are comfortable in and is also highly sought after. Write sensible and information-rich content on this niche that enables people to learn more. In addition to getting a better ranking in the result list, you will also be considered an expert on that particular niche if you have over two hundreds articles to your credit on your blog.

You can use a site map as well. Many people undermine the importance of this simple tool. The site map is very critical to your blog if you want visitors to easily navigate through the pages. The absence of this site map can make your blog look like a jigsaw puzzle which takes a long time to decipher. Use navigation bars or side bars to guide visitors to various sections of your blog and make things easier for not only them, but also for search engines to index your blog.

These are some of the simple points that help you understand the relationship between blogs and search engine optimization. In addition to these, you might also want to understand the offsite techniques though you will not be able to have a direct hold over them.

I well understand that content is king on the Web, but does anyone know about how often new blogs should be posted to be considered optimal?

Blog design is def. crucial. I miss the old blogging days, though, when all you had to do is think of an interesting idea and type!
