How To: Start A Successful Blog

by Melissa Smich on May 20, 2010

If you have a creative mind and a flare for writing, blog writing can indeed be your ideal option. Following are certain tips that can help you in the initial stages of your blogging venture:

  • Select The Right subject

You need to be very careful while choosing the subject of your blog. Choose a subject that mirrors your knowledge and passion. Also, ask yourself whether you can post blogs on the same subject consistently. If you fail to zero in on the subject of your choice, consider selecting themes that are search engine friendly (one of the most searched topics). Some such topics that never die out are blogs related to moneymaking, technology and city-centric, and product related blogs. If you can think of creative and original contents, you can consider writing blogs on poems, short stories, thoughts and ideas.

Here are some tips from Jeremy Wright who started the wildely successful blog network B5

  • Have a Consistent URL

Remember, the URL contains the unique identity you generate for your blog. After deciding on a domain name for your blog, avoid changing it. This is because each time you change the URL; you’ll need to popularize your blog again. The problem doesn’t end there; even after you change your URL, chances are that the articles and search engines that reference posts in your blog contain links to the previous URL. This can be a source of confusion for your readers and so, can result in lost readership. To avoid all such complications, it is better you stick to your original URL.

  • Post High-Quality Content

The sure-fire way of attracting new readers is, writing good quality content in your blogs. No person likes to read a boring content. Hence, ensure that your blogs are, not only, informative but also fun to read. Besides, blogs are meant to be crisp and easy to comprehend. Hence, see to it that your blogs are easy to read and understand. Avoid including too many technical jargons, as it may seriously affect your readership. Also, in the initial days, it’s very important that you write intriguing blogs. After you start getting a considerable amount of readers, keep updating your blogs with innovative and creative content to retain the existing readers.

  • Be Patient

Unless you’re a sought-after celebrity or a well-known writer, do not expect readers to flood your web site as soon as you start posting contents. You need to be very patient. Also, be ready to put in a lot of effort. Keep updating your blogs regularly.

Remember no pain no gain. It takes a significant amount of effort to assimilate information and formulate your own content.

I always run my blogs through Copyscape before posting–you’d be surprised how often you can unintentionally lift a catchy phrase from someone else without even realizing it.
