How to Start Blogging: Considerations Worth Making

by Melissa Smich on June 18, 2010

Today, there are so many options for new bloggers, and you need to make a few considerations before you can choose your blogging platform. There are several blog platforms  available to  bloggers, and thus, it becomes confusing when it comes to selecting the right blog platform. Though a blog platform can be changed at a later stage, it costs money and inconvenience. Selecting the right blog platform is critical to the success of any blog. Here are some tips that will help bloggers get started:

  • The most important thing you must keep in mind is the objective of your blog. If you have a professional objective, then factors, such as, cost and time become secondary. However, if you are writing a blog for personal objectives, these factors play a more important role.
  • Secondly, depending on your objective, you must decide a budget for your blog. There are both paid and free blogging services available on the Internet. If you are blogging to promote a business, it is recommended that you don’t use a free blog platform. Things, such as, a marketing plan for your blog, or the size of your maintenance budget will all dictate the choice of your blog platform.
  • Another important criterion to remember is your technical competence. Some blog platforms require the bloggers to have basic knowledge of HTML and CSS. If you have the technical knowledge to manage and design your blog on your own, you can opt for a professionally hosted blog platform, but if not, youcan always get a design template.
  • All kinds of blog platforms have their own pros and cons. Thus, it is recommended that you study all blogs and then make a decision. Before you settle down for a blog platform, make sure that you do ample research on the various blog platforms on the Internet. free hosted services like “yourname@blogspot.com” are cheap and are easy to start and maintain. The disadvantages of free hosted service platforms include; lesser control over your blog, limited configuration options, and the absence of your brand name from the sub-domain.

You must keep these things in mind when select the right blog platform for yourself.

Yikes, I never realized there were so many options when it comes to launching a blog. Given my technical competence, or lack thereof, I’d most likely spring for a hosted blog service.

Yeah, it’s funny you mentioned cost and time in the first paragraph. I probably would’ve started a personal blog, but I just felt that it would take too much time and cost too much money to be worth it for me.

Have there been free blogs that have really taken off and made a lot of money, or is that really unlikely?
