Better Youtubing

by Arjun Kathir on July 29, 2010

In this article I am going to give you ways to improve your Youtube experience. With the introduction of high definition and the new subtitles feature, never has there been a better time to learn.

Search Parameters – Sometimes you think about a great video that you have seen on Youtube but can’t seem to find it. Or at other times you might want to create a list of similar items looking for what you want. Since Google took over Youtube, they introduced many of their search parameters to the site. For example, if you want to search for one of multiple phrases, you enter a part of your search like this, and Youtube will return results with all of these words.

Filtering - By clicking on advanced options in Youtube, you can find ways to filter your results to be just what you’re looking for. Maybe you want a music video but only want it in high definition? You can do that. Other options include video duration, language, upload time and with or without closed captions.

Song Licensing – You can now license songs on Youtube. Whereas before many of your videos that contained music tracks from bands could have a claim put against them, a Portland based organisation called ‘RumbleFish’ has solved this problem. You can now license a song through them to be used on your video for the tiny sum of $1.99. This is of course as long as you give attribution to the artist and use it in no way which is business related.

This is similar to Youtube’s “click to buysystem which has been around for a while now. What that does is it allows you to listen to a song on Youtube and click to buy it at the bottom of the video through iTunes.

Advertising – Youtube knows that some of their ads can be annoying and interrupt the experience of the video. This is why they have the bigger ones on the right hand side. The ones on the video though have recently been made so that you can skip them. What it mean is that if you don’t like what an advert is saying, you can click a button and it will change to another advert.

SEO - In case you are not familiar with marketing terms SEO means search engine optimization. Let’s say you have uploaded a video of you covering the song “Wonderwall” by Oasis. You have to think to yourself “What would people search who wanted to find this?”. Call your video that. People aren’t going to find a video called “Me messing around singing” for example. “Oasis Wonderwall cover” will come closer to the top of the ranking, get more views and come up more times in related searches which get a LOT of clicks in Youtube.

What are you waiting for, start youtubing now.

The song licensing feature is a real win-win: artists get money and exposure, and video makers can enhance the mood of their videos w/ their favorite songs.

It’s about time YouTube had captions. Now those with hearing impairments can more fully enjoy the viral video experience.

Can anyone get an ad on their YouTube video now or does it still have to be approved?

Great advice about YouTube and SEO. Pretty soon, you’ll be sunk SEO-wise without a lineup of quality YouTube videos.
