What is eCommerce VPS?

by Ozgur Akman on October 25, 2010

vps_diagramVPS stands for Virtual Private Server. This relatively new technology allows you to have your web site hosted by a dedicated private server. This means that you are not relying on a web hosting company to keep your site up and running. If it gets too big and is about to crash their system, they will shut you down. So, when you’re planning for your business to expand (and who wouldn’t be?), you will want to think ahead and look into a VPS server for your web site.

eCommerce VPS is a way for businesses to make the most use of their web site. They can do all their product listings, sales, customer service, payment processing, inventory management, tax calculations, affiliate programs and more all through a private server dedicated just to their business.

The advantages of a VPS for eCommerce are that you can have virtually unlimited space to run and store your web site. If you are just starting out with a web site and think you might just be listing a few products, what will happen when you grow and want to list hundreds or thousands of products for sale? You’ll need a private server that can handle your business traffic and unlimited product listings.

Another advantage of using VPS for your commercial site is that can upload software yourself onto your server, make changes, and reboot the server if need be. You don’t have to rely on someone to come in and fix or maintain your web site’s server because you are in full control of it. Down time means lost sales and you can’t afford to have your site crash due to high volume. After all, isn’t it high volume traffic and sales you’re looking for in the first place?

eCommerce is easier and more efficient with a VPS server in place. You can accept coupons, choose multiple languages, encrypt each transaction so it’s secure and take several forms of payment. You can list your entire catalog online so you don’t have to mail a costly printed version anymore. Just direct customers to your online version.

A good VPS service will be up and running the same day you order it, be easy for you to use even if you’re not a born techie, and be search engine friendly so that customers can find you easily.

VPS services are not very expensive compared to what you’re getting. Depending on which extras you choose, you can usually find the ideal package within your budget.

Remember in the old days when “inventory management” meant physically counting everything you had in stock every day? To be able to do that through VPS is a dream come true.

If VPS can do tax calculations efficiently, that’s reason enough for me to sign up.

And anything that can help you avoid downtime should be treasured. Downtime can be a profit destroyer.

VPS is certainly inexpensive for all that you get. I think there’s a perception out there that it’s more expensive than it is.

vps is ideal for product catalogues: not just posting them, but creating them as well.
