Microsoft WebMatrix & Hyper-V VPS: The Perfect Pair

by Tim Attwood on January 21, 2011

WebMatrix VPS HostingFor the rapid prototyping and development of any website, there’s an overabundance of tools available online to suit any taste. While Integrated Development Environments like Eclipse, Aptana and Netbeans are popular with professional developers and coders, many amateurs and hobbyists find them overly complex and difficult to learn. Even expert programmers and designers find them overwhelming at times. In many cases, web development would greatly benefit from a more streamlined solution. In that vein, Microsoft has created a new tool called WebMatrix to simplify the development process.

Microsoft WebMatrix is a comprehensive, full-featured IDE that gives developers and webmasters the ability to create and test their websites and applications in one place before moving them onto the web. WebMatrix includes all the usual bells and whistles such as a code editor for HTML, CSS and Javascript along with a few other tools that will ease the development process. It also features database and web server integration on your desktop. It’s like having a fully functional web server and host on your computer so that you can see how your website will perform before you go live. Best of all, Microsoft WebMatrix can run both PHP and ASP.NET seamlessly, giving you flexibility when it comes to how you want to deploy your web pages.

When you are ready to go live, websites developed with WebMatrix can be easily transitioned to a VPS web host quickly and easily. The only thing left to do is decide what type of web host you want to use. While Shared Web Hosts are fine for simple blogs or static pages, VPS hosting is really the only option for dynamic sites that receive decent traffic. The Microsoft Hyper-V VPS platform is one of the most popular VPS solutions in wide use today. Hyper-V is a virtualization technology that allows multiple server instances to be run on one single machine. With a VPS hosting, you get full control over your server, allowing you to modify the software to suit your own unique needs and specifications. Ultimately, it’s far more reliable and secure than Shared Hosting.

If you need to get a website up and running in as short a time as possible, Microsoft WebMatrix is one of the best development options available. It allows developers of all skill levels to easily code and test their sites and applications to make sure they’re “production ready” on launch day without all the hassle that other development environments entail. When you are ready to host your site, a WebMatrix VPS powered by Microsoft Hyper-V should be at the top of your list when looking for VPS hosting providers. For websites both simple and complex, it’s the most painless and straightforward route to take.

Wow, if a professional programmer is overwhelmed by programs like Eclipse, I’d hate to think of what my chances with that program would be.

WebMatrix is a great idea. I love the thought of being able to test my site out as thoroughly as possible before letting the world see it.

I really want to try WebMatrix now. I wonder how fast I could get a website going with it.

@Stoddard, within 15 minutes, using only WebMatrix, I had a basic, yet fully functioning blog with a comment system working. It’s amazingly fast, has awesome SEO Reporting feature – I seriously cannot think of anything that is as good as WebMatrix, love it!
