What does the phrase "near field communications" mean? I know this is going to be a big element in smartphones pretty soon.

I don't know what "near field communications" is; however, I've always wished that cell phones could talk directly to each other without the use of a cell tower. This would be a great help when two people are in an area with no coverage.
