One of my favorite projects in elementary school was having a pen pal from overseas for a few months. Is there any hope of anyone ever having a pen pal again?

Sure there is, only now they are called Facebook Friends or any social networking site friends.
In the age of digital communication you would be hard pressed to find anyone still hand writing letters.
