desktop to virtual server

Is it a good idea to try to put everything on your desktop onto a virtual server? It seems like this is the wave of the future.

I haven't tried this, but I wouldn't be surprised if desktops as we know them are a thing of the past five or ten years from now.

If you have your backups, you can try it but what is your purpose?
