Any tips for using message boards for advertising your site? How often do you post on various message boards? Do you have to get permission before you can talk about your online business on someone else's board?

You don't have to get permission to publish as long as you make it right. That means, if you are going to advertise your site, you should do it in the right message board and do it without spamming.
