A new computer chip for tablets is being developed that's quad-core. What does this mean, though?

Its mean that the processor will have 4 cores

A multi-core processor is composed of two or more independent cores. One can describe it as an integrated circuit which has two or more individual processors (called cores in this sense).

Here is a little tip; make sure the software you plan to use can actually benefit from quad core technology, before you buy a quad core processor. Or else; it is a very high possibility that you will get the performance of a single core or less. Since; a software designed for a single core may have difficulty with 4 cores.
