503 error

Running a joomla-based website here for about 8 months or so. Update it periodically. 10 days or so ago, without me having done anything to it in a couple weeks, it suddenly starts returning "Service Unavailable - HTTP Error 503" in response to any connection attempt to any page, including admin pages, in any browser. Brief research indicates this error is sometimes returned temporarily when there is server maintenance. Server maintenance should not take 10 days.
