Software for making YouTube Vids

I have been thinking about doing a couple of youtube videos for personal use more so than for business but I am not sure how to go about doing it

Does anyone have any input on programs that should be used and whether it is better to use a webcam or just use a regular recorder and then upload them to your computer

I've wondered about this also to be quite honest. The difference in quality from one video to the next is just mind numbing to me. I've seen some that are amazing and some that are terrible so I often wonder what the difference is.
