Do you think the day is coming soon when movies are released on DVD, on demand, and on the Internet on the same day they come out in theaters?
No, unless there is a new stream of revenue for the distributor/production companies, I don't see a reason for this to happen.
"According to a 2000 study by ABN AMRO, about 26% of Hollywood movie studios' worldwide income came from box office ticket sales; 46% came from VHS and DVD sales to consumers; and 28% came from television (broadcast, cable, and pay-per-view)."
If a movie was released to all outputs on the same date, studios are losing out on a lot of revenue (not to mention movie theatres, etc.). With the mainstream having access to pirated movies so easily now, having a DVD quality rip of a new release would take down the entire industry. :eek:

Disney often releases movies direct to DVD.
Also, sequels are sometimes released direct to DVD. For example, The Lost Boys (http://lostboysthetribe.warnerbros.com/), Starship Troopers (http://www.sonypictures.com/homevideo/starshiptroopers2heroofthefederation/), and Snakes on a Train (http://www.theasylum.cc/product.php?id=120).

Yes but these movies that are released directly-to-DVD are not released in theatres as well.
I think OP means movies that are released to all outlets in the same day.
For example, if Inception was released on July 17 in theatres, DVD, and On Demand all at once... The gross revenue would be cut in half.
