    Is it ever a good idea to use a third party mail service when you have a hosted website?

    It's case to case basis. I would use a third party for reasons like personal use, an yes, to free up some sapce.

    Some mailbox is used for bulk storage and you can free up to 2GB by using those free emails out there or even more.
