    I was wondering what the phrase "open source" refers to. If a program isn't open source, then what is it?

    "Open-source" means that a software's source code is freely available to the public.

    If a software isn't open-source, it's closed-source. This means that the source code is not available to the public. Closed-source software is also called "proprietary software".
