  • Mailbox unavailable. The server response was: Requested action not taken: mailbox una

I Googled around but didn't find an answer on how to solve this issue. I set up on my Windows VPS running on Plesk 11 a mailbox. Sending mails from and to my email client works just fine. The issue is coming when using it in my website's contact form, email is not send.
    I am getting this message

Mailbox unavailable. The server response was: Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable or not local
The recipient mail box exists, not on this server but it does exists.

Correction, as you already indicated it was not on this VPS server, but does that mailbox have the same domain name as your VPS mailboxes?

I created a mailbox on my vps called mybox1@mydomain.biz the recipient is anotherstuff@mydomain.cl . The web part of domain .cl= is hosted on my VPS but the email part is NOT hosted here, it is on another mail server.

This is more than likely the problem, as locally you will have record of the domain and it will be looking to send internally first and then fail. The only way this **might** work is if you both disable all email services for the .cl domain and also be sure that for any DNS that is created for your .cl domain within your VPS has the proper MX records specified. Hosting mail and website separately can be a bit difficult especially when sending from a local web server.

You could also try using an external smtp server as it's the local VPS smtp server that is determining the wrong location to send the message.

The email service for my .cl domain works fine never had a problem with, MX records is setup correctly. How can I disable the email service from Plesk 11 ?

By the way the email service for my .biz domain works also fine.

We're currently using an external smtp server under another "borrowed" domain name and we would really like using a current user name.

Yes, it makes sense that the majority of scenarios will work, particularly when sending and receiving from outside of your VPS. If I'm assessing the problem correctly, the problem should only occur when you send directly from your Plesk VPS web server. This Parallels article addresses this problem (although it does not describe what happens very well) KB Parallels: How to disable mail service for one domain.

I'm not sure if it's changed in Plesk 11, but in Plesk 10 you can disable mail service for the domain in Plesk under Email Configuration menu. I believe this will disable mail service for all domains under the subscription you are managing however so if all of your domains are under the same subscription you made need to separate them out first...

I read the KB's article you listed. And it says

These actions are not possible in PP 10. You can manage mail service on a subscription level, but not on a domain level.
I guess this means I am in a dead end here and won't be able to use my VPS smtp server to connect to my contact form. Not what I expected :-( Unless PP11 allows it but I have got my doubt.

                Hi Corobori,

The article is confusing that's for sure, but a subscription can house a single domain name. So disabling email for the subscription containing your problematic domain would be your goal. It may be however that you have two domains in one subscription and only want to disable it for one, in which case, if you split your domain names into separate subscriptions this can be achieved. It's largely based on how you configure Plesk and should be possible. Subscriptions may only be manageable in when your panel is in Reseller view rather than power panel view (not sure which you're using :S). This setting can be found in your "Interface Management" options under "Server" > "Settings".
