How can something so important to e-commerce be overrated? It is a necessity.

Very true. If you have an e-commerce site without an SSL certificate, your visitors will get warnings about the site being insecure, and they'll be that less likely to provide their credit card information. If you want to make a profit, you need to make your visitors feel secure about providing their credit card info.
