It seems that viruses have hit some Android phones--mostly in Russia, I think. Are there good ways to protect your Androids from such viruses?

Yes indeed, Kaspersky lab have found new Trojan that specifically target the Android platform Called
Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a

Trojan-SMS Category is the class of the most widely spread malware for mobile phones today, but Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a is the first malware that specifically target the Android platform.

What should we do?
user is encouraged to consider the application services, which require access when being installed. This includes access to premium services that charge for sending SMS and making calls. If the user agrees with these functions during the installation process, the smartphone will be able to make calls and send SMS without the consent of the user
