I've heard that Magento can really put a strain on your system and you shouldn't use it unless your site has a ton of memory. Anyone agree?

One of the drawbacks of Magento is currently its speed if default configuration is used. there are certain ways of making it run faster not only by upgrading memory, You can speed up your Magento by tweaking .htaccess file a little. just googling it with keywords such as "speeding up magento".
