custom 404

Someone was telling me it's a good idea to create a "custom 404 error" page that can redirect traffic to your website. I had no idea what he meant. Can anyone kindly help me out, please?

most people will simply click on the BACK button and try another place when they encounter a "404 File Not Found" error. The majority of people don't even know that there are any other alternatives.

So if you don`t want to lose your visitor/traffic you need to do something, a "custom 404 error" will help people who come to your site by following an old link or by typing your URL incorrectly, they will guided by this custom page to your new url/link.
