Is there a difference between a computer programmer and an administrator? Is one more advanced than the other?

"A programmer is a technician, interested in the nuts and bolts of how things work. Programmers are usually detail oriented, project focused individuals. The jokes about programmers having "poor social skills" and being "locked in a room and having pizza's slid under the door" are not all that far fetched.

A network admin is a manager. He supervises the techs that do the grunt work and makes sure all the pieces fit together into a coherent whole. He is far more worried about the annual department budget and whether the boss is getting the report formatted the way he want than he ever is about the hardware or the software that gets the job done. He spends far more time in meeting rooms than he ever spends on the keyboard.
His skill set is very different from the programmer. Programmers with good social skills and proficiency in corporate politics can rise to be network administrators, but it is not a common path. Most of the time, Senior Programmers move up to Project Management positions."
