I know there are a lot of programs that can track your websites metrics and statistics for you. But are there any free metrics programs that are just as goood as the paid versions?

On-site web analytics
AWStats and Webalizer are the two most common, and both are relatively basic "log analytics" packages that offer information about visits-over-time, most-visited pages, referrers, search strings, and some data about your visitors' browsers and locations.

Off-site analytics
Google Analytics offers substantially more functionality than the basic tools, and is free

I use google analytics for most of my sites as it ties into adwords quite well.
