Are domain name registrations chosen according to where your business operates? Could you get, say, a .ASIA reg. even if your business is located in the U.S.?

It depends on the Top-Level Domain. For example, .com is first-come, first-serve. Many regional domains, however, have presence requirements... including .asia:
