httpdocs folder on the cloud

With a cloud account there is an httpdocs folder where the initial files are located.

But when a wordpress installation is installed, for example, a new folder structure is used that is outside of the above mentioned httpdocs folder.

Apparently the original httpdocs folder is no longer usable. Is that correct?

I mean, I can ftp files to the orignal httpdocs folder, but I cannot navigate to a file (e.g., an html file) using a browser.

The original httpdocs folder started out as the root folder as far as browser navigation.

But now the wordpress installation folder appears to be the root folder.

Is that correct?

The scenario you describe would only occur if you installed WordPress to the root of your site URL in which case it would indeed act as the root from that point on. It is recommend that you install to subdirectories for this reason.

Hi,

On the cloud control panel, when the customer says to install wordpress, the customer has no control over the folder that the system creates. The system creates a folder called, for example, "6359". I was told this was for security purposes.

Like you said, I could have made it, 6359/blog, but that is not what I'm talking about here.

It's possible that not all of your staff understands what is happening with the cloud operations.

There is a webspace/httpdocs and there is a siteapps/6359/htdocs (using my example of a "6359" folder).

My question is... does the webspace/httpdocs become useless now?

The number of the folder in which your application is installed is really only relevant if you need to update those files. When you install the application you are given an option as to where you want the site to appear in relation to your domain.

So if you chose "/" then it will appear at the root of your domain eg. www.yourDomain.com/blogdefault.php.

If you chose "/blog" then it would appear at www.yourDomain.com/blog/blogDefault.php and your root direct would be available for you to make changes from within your webspace/httpdocs folder.

What technically happens is that 'siteapps/6359/htdocs' is a virtual folder that is assigned overtop of whichever path you specified during the install.

So to answer your question, assuming you chose "/" as the location for the blog, then yes webspace/httpdocs becomes useless since requests for it go to your application folder instead.

that said, you can of course backup your blog data, uninstall it and reinstall it to another URL and you'll be back in business after restoring the data.

Only the main FTP user can access the siteapps folder. The numbered folders will not be visible in the file list. You must type the location manually in your FTP client, similar to using a CD command in the terminal.
