Has anyone worked with Drupal? I hear it's complex but worth it.

i actually set it up for a friend largely because I thought it would be one of the easiest to customize and update with content (and maintain some level visual value).

They're not always easy to setup initially but I think the auto installers we offer get rid of that part and let you just jump in without much fuss.

I have & it's a big pain in the butt. Their htaccess files for their pretty urls are so funky if you mess with 'em at all you can mess up the whole site. Newbies almost have to use the installer to install it. Then they have to be very careful when adding mods & upgrading that they don't mess up that htaccess file.

Then it's not very "plug & play". You can't just go about setting up categories & what not. The forum is basically the only place you can set up categories easily. The rest of the content types either require a bunch of work or a mod. Speaking of mods I don't think I have yet to add just one. For every one you add it requires 2/3 more just to make that one work.

It's a lot of searching & reading. But afterwards you could end up with a pretty cool site & people only have to register/sign in once to use it. That's what attracted me to it.

I have a couple of custom Drupal installs running. I tried to use the installer in the basic hosting for the first one and couldn't see how to add my custom themes and modules without even ftp access to the install. For this reason I went to a custom install which went quite well for the first site. The second and third though are proving to be a pain. I'm moving one of them to VPS. The inability to write temp tables in MySQL meant that search wouldn't work.

This morning I ran into a second set of problems around insufficient memory to run even the basic menu system in Drupal. It has been so long since I ran into this problem on a server that it took me a while to figure out. I'm still waiting for the email from support to tell me the solution wasn't appropriate.

The support email exchange has been primarily to refer me to Drupal support (which I actually provide in IRC on an irregular basis) sigh.

It is a commitment to learn any CMS if you want to do anything complex. Drupal is an excellent choice but not the only one.

Very interesting info here. That tutorial posting was helpful, although after reading these comments I think I might want to stay away from Drupal until I at least learn a lot more about using it.
