What does "cloning" mean as it relates to virtual serving? Why would you clone a server?

There could be numerous reasons to do so. I'd say the most common are for backup purposes or creating a template of a working system that you can then modify slightly to produce a machine without going through the install of every little thing on a fresh operating system.
