    Default Virtual Hosting and FTP

    Greetings All,

I have having a terrible time getting ftp to work with my new myhosting.com virtual server.

I created an FTP site, I created virtual directory that corresponds to a folder in my documents, the firewall seems to be configured to let ftp traffic through.

Ugh. I have spent hours on this. Whenever I connect I get this message:

    *** CuteFTP 7.0 - build Mar 10 2005 ***

    STATUS:> Getting listing ""...
    STATUS:> Connecting to FTP server 168.144.253.60:21 (ip = 168.144.253.60)...
STATUS:> Socket connected. Waiting for welcome message...
    220 Microsoft FTP Service
    STATUS:> Connected. Authenticating...
    COMMAND:> USER VPS0408Admin
550 No such host is known.
ERROR:> Requested action not taken (e.g., file or directory not found, no access).
    ERROR:> Can't login. Disconnecting...

    Any help will be appreciated.

Somewhere along the line, I entered the wrong user id. Fixed here, but same result...Also, I put in a welcome message on my ftp server. It certainly isn't 220 Microsoft FTP Service. So is that an error code?

P.S., I have other myhosting.com accounts and have no trouble connecting to any of them...

    STATUS:> Getting listing ""...
    STATUS:> Resolving host name vps0418.vps.myhosting.com...
    STATUS:> Host name vps0418.vps.myhosting.com resolved: ip = 168.144.253.60.
    STATUS:> Connecting to FTP server vps0418.vps.myhosting.com:21 (ip = 168.144.253.60)...
STATUS:> Socket connected. Waiting for welcome message...
    220 Microsoft FTP Service
    STATUS:> Connected. Authenticating...
    COMMAND:> USER VPS0418Admin
550 No such host is known.
ERROR:> Requested action not taken (e.g., file or directory not found, no access).

I guess I must be getting through to some extent as I get the following message when I STOP the FTP Service:

    *** CuteFTP 7.0 - build Mar 10 2005 ***

    STATUS:> Getting listing ""...
    STATUS:> Resolving host name vps0418.vps.myhosting.com...
    STATUS:> Host name vps0418.vps.myhosting.com resolved: ip = 168.144.253.60.
    STATUS:> Connecting to FTP server vps0418.vps.myhosting.com:21 (ip = 168.144.253.60)...
STATUS:> Socket connected. Waiting for welcome message...
ERROR:> Can't read from control socket. Socket error = #10054.

I was able to get this working after removing the host name in the FTP Site Binding Dialog. Not sure why this had to be done to get it to work...

There is a wiki article on how you can setup FTP for Windows virtual servers on our site at:

    http://wiki.myhosting.com/FTP_Setup_for_Virtual_Servers.

This article should prove helpful to anyone having problems setting up FTP. If you have any questions let me know.

    Default FTP benefits

I'm pretty green to the tech side of website design, but I've toyed with the idea of expanding my abilities. What are the benefits of FTP design? On the other side of things it just seems to be a royal pain to migrate these sites once their live.

    Default FTP client software

Which FTP software do you think is safe. I was using Filezilla but My site was hacked. Do you have any suggestion?

Filezilla is updated regularly for security concerns... possibly too often, gets annoying to update so often. I've never had any issue with security though! Very good software

Default This thread should be dead...

I posted this a LONG time ago.

My server was inadvertently deleted and I had to do the setup for FTP again. After screwing around for 8 hours I finally stopped the FTP service (that I had to install because it was not turned on for my default installation (can't figure that one out)) and then I installed CoreFTP which worked right away.
