    Default host hardware

    I came across a blog from a few years ago that said virtual servers can't run as fast as their host hardware. Is this still the case today?

    I don't know what you mean by 'as fast as their host hardware', but virtualisation creates an abstraction layer. This creates overhead. Parallels Virtuozzo Containers advertises overhead of ~2%, and Hypervisor has overhead of ~20%.
