This explanation above was pretty clear:

"Say you need separate database, web, file, and Jabber servers. Rather than dedicating an entire computer to each of those services, you can set-up one physical (IE: real) server, and configure it to run multiple computers inside of it.

Each of those computers that runs inside of the physical server is called a "virtual server" or "virtual machine".

Creating this type of virtual environment has all sorts of benefits, including being very cost-effective, making server deployment and management much easier in large computing environments, etc."

    Default also confused

I also get confused by all of these technical terms. For instance, I've heard the term "scalable," but I'm still not sure what it means or what it refers to.

All I can say is that the more I use cloud computing, the harder it is for me to imagine life without it.

    Hey All,

    This video on
    youtube.com/watch?v=ae_DKNwK_ms
Cloud computing from Salesforce might help explain in more laymans terms what its all about. I always find videos easier than text explanations.

    Hope this helps!

    Hope it helps:

Unlike virtual private server hosting, using a cloud hosting company means that the server space is separated over different nodes. The use of multiple servers for one account means that there is 100% uptime, and companies can choose to scale up or down without any hassle or interruption to their service.

Default Virtual Servers VS Cloud Computing Reply to Thread

VPS hosting is type of web hosting, while it can be served via a cluster is commonly found on a single "beefed up" server.
And cloud computing is generally found run on a cluster of servers that allow for redundancy and fail over.Cloud computing is using ISCSI or other form of Network Storage for its storage space, while most of the VPS hosts I see are using local storage.

    Best Regards
