Slow upload speeds

Hi, I was wondering what if there are any options for upgrading the connection speed for my vps, as I have lately been experiencing rather slow upload rates. I am currently hosting a Counter-Strike Source game server, which requires a decent upload rate (~5-6 Mb/s), in order for clients to download server files quickly. Here is a speedtest.net speed report:

In general, a good rule-of-thumb is roughly 6KB (Kilo-Bytes) upstream (upload) per player slot, but this will vary depending how you adjust and optimize the cvars in HL/CS which I will get into later in the guide. Below is a graph we've created to illustrate and give you general an idea of how much upstream bandwidth you will need. The text on the far left of the graph is line speed in kbps (kilobits per second) and the numbers below the bars indicates the amount of player slots.

First of all, thank you for the response and for submitting my request to the staff. I'm looking to eventually host around 32 player slots, which would require around 1.512kb/s, based on the estimates you gave me. Also, keep in mind that the server needs to be able to upload maps to clients who no not have the maps which are on the mapcycle. I don't want people quitting the server simply because it takes them 15 minutes to download a simple 10 mb map.

Are you able to run your speed test without being connected to the server by Remote Desktop? This may greatly affect your bandwidth throughput.

Also was the speed test performed in isolation? Or was there other activity on the server at the time?

Hi, and thank you for the response. I have conducted two independent speed tests: one connected to remote desktop and one not connected. Both tests were conducted in isolation, with no other bandwidth being consumed or any processes using up system resources besides the actual test itself coupled with the browser. Test one was conducted at approximately 1:30 am GMT and test two was conducted at approximately 1:32 am GMT. Here are the results of the tests:

We've had a look at the network usage on your host, and right now usage seems low, so there shouldn't be any issues.

Between the time I started this thread and the time you posted your response, I had the game server offline, with no clients connecting to the server or downloading any files. My main issue I will most likely be dealing with is when multiple, or even single clients at this point, are downloading maps and materials from the server, which will take a decent upload rate, considering the average file size of the maps the server hosts is ~10mb.

I've run my own tests on speedtest.net using my own server, and I notice drastically different results, depending on which speedtest server was selected.




Have you tried a different server? Are your results similar to mine?
