Goals

After reading this guide, you should be able to connect to a Windows virtual server using Remote Desktop Connection. Using remote desktop connection, you can move your files freely between your VPS and any computer, with no need for additional programs or confusing FTP information. Using RDP only requires a few extra steps when connecting normally to your VPS.

Connect Using Remote Desktop Connection From Windows

Here are the steps to connect to your VPS from a Windows system using Remote Desktop Connection:

1.                  To find the Remote Desktop Connection shortcut, click the Start button, click All Programs, click Accessories, click Communications, and then click Remote Desktop Connection. To quickly open the Remote Desktop Connection, open the Start menu, and then type mstsc in the Search box.

2.                  Replace “Mention Your server IP Address” with your actual server IP and then click Connect.
Your username should be in the following format: servername\administrator. All VPS servers follow the VPSXXXX format and the administrator login follows the vpsxxxxadmin format.

3.                  Once you click Connect, you will need to enter the password of the VPS and then click the arrow next to the password field to login.

You have now logged into the server.

Connect to a Windows VPS from a Linux Machine

Linux has rdesktop utility. You do not need to install any third party software such as a VNC server to connect to your Windows machine. All you need is an rdesktop client on your Linux workstation. Here are the steps to connect to a Windows VPS from a Linux machine:

1.                  Open Konsole from your local Linux machine. If you do not have the rdesktop utility, use the following command to install it. For a CentOS system, you have to type “yum” instead of “apt-get”.

2.                  To connect to MS-Windows systems from Linux, type the following command

You have now logged into the server.

Troubleshooting Remote Connection

In case you are unable to connect to your server remotely, you can use the telnet command to check whether the remote desktop connection port is open. Use the following command to telnet:

The telnet result should give the following output:

If you do not get the result, try to turn off your local machine firewall.

Conclusion

Now that you have successfully logged into the server, you can connect to your computer from various locations to access your applications, files, contacts, and more. This feature provides solid functionality and good performance.
