Kernel

In Linux, the kernel is a computer program that manages input/output requests from software and translates them into machine language instructions for the CPU and other devices. Additionally, the kernel also manages all user-level processes, dividing up CPU processing time amongst them so all applications run smoothly. As well as performing memory management, device management and implementing system calls.

In a Virtuozzo environment like the Virtual Private Servers we offer, the Virtuozzo kernel is a modified Linux kernel that adds support for running virtual containers. Under this modified kernel, multiple individual systems can operate using a single, shared kernel. This provides better overall system performance for virtual hosts, while maintaining strict isolation of files, users and groups, processes and network devices which each container being a separate entity on one physical system.
