How to password protect a resource in Plesk.

This tutorial assumes that you have already logged in to Plesk.

Now let's learn how to create a password-protected directory in Plesk.

  1. Scroll down to the Files group.

  2. Click the Password Protected Directories icon.

  3. As you can see, there are currently no password-protected directories in our account. Let's go ahead and create one. Click the Add Protected Directory icon.

  4. Enter the name of the directory you wish to protect in the box next to "Directory name".

    • Note: If the directory does not exist yet, Plesk will create it as well as protect it.
  5. Let's uncheck the SSL checkbox, unless you use https protocol.

  6. Type a resource description or a welcoming message in the "Header Text" box.

  7. When ready click OK to save the changes.

  8. The directory /clients has been created and protected. We must now add at least one user who can access the protected directory. Click the Add New User icon.

  9. Now choose a username and password for this user, and then confirm the password by re-entering it.

  10. When ready, click OK to save the changes.

  11. That's it! A new user has been created for the directory we protected.

    • You can add more users to this protected directory by repeating this process, or you can delete users by selecting them and then clicking the Remove link with the red X.
  12. Let's go back to the protected directories page. Click on "Password Protected Directories" near the top of the page.

  13. Now let's remove the password protection from the /clients directory. Select the directory and then click Remove.

  14. Confirm the removal by clicking in the checkbox, then click OK.

    • Note that removing the protection from the directory does not remove the directory itself.

That's it! We've just successfully removed the password protection from /clients directory.

Note: You may need to restart apache service for password protection to start working fully. This is also accomplished by rebooting the server.

This is the end of the tutorial. You now know how to password-protect a directory in Plesk, and create/manage users for access to protected directories.
