According to Gartner's recent Magic Quadrant report for the IaaS industry, the cloud has had a significant impact on the web hosting industry.
While the Magic Quadrant focuses on identifying the elite companies in an industry, Gartner's report also provided significant insights on how businesses are using IaaS services. Overall, the report said 25 percent of web hosting services will be defined as IaaS solutions before the end of the year.
Web and virtual server hosting solutions typically deal with renting space in a shared, VPS or dedicated server where a company's website information is stored and published. The report said many companies are beginning to invest in IaaS-based web hosting solutions to experiment with the cloud and determine what it can accomplish for their business.
Currently, the web hosting and IaaS markets are still somewhat separate from one another, the report said, because web hosting is much more mature than its cloud computing counterpart. Over time, Gartner anticipates IaaS and web hosting solutions to eventually converge into one service.
A recent IT Business Edge report said IaaS is capable of combining with hosting solutions to scalable solutions featuring local, regional and international load balancing tools.
