Report: Data backup necessary on cPanel servers

According to a report from the Web Hosting Geeks, users on a cPanel-based virtual server hosting plan, such as a cPanel VPS, need to regularly backup their data.

The report said cPanel is one of the most popular virtual server management programs because it allows users to easily move their data from one platform to another when they change hosting plans, such as upgrading from a shared server to a VPS solution.

While cPanel makes it easy to move the site and retain its data, the report still urges webmasters to backup their websites frequently, especially if they are making any changes to the site. The report said a functioning version of the site should be backed up prior to any alteration of the site's code in case the change does not work and the old site needs to be recovered.

When users simply cannot backup all of their data because the system cannot handle it, a recent PC World report recommends running data through a few filters to determine its value. The report identified a number of categories for data that should always be backed up, including personal content or items that cannot be replaced, and information that the site owner is legally bound to retain.
