As more and more data is moved from physical servers to virtualized server environments, it is difficult for many companies to understand how their access and retrieval times are getting longer for data rather than shorter. The answer to this problem for many VPS providers is simply to throw new and better hardware at a server in order to force it to perform at a higher rate of speed. While this will work, it will be far more costly in many cases than necessary and will be only a stop gap solution. However, if this issue is not addressed, storage can mean an end to virtualization plans for a company; a stall in an otherwise excellent IT plan.
The reason for this storage stall lies largely in the fact that while virtual servers are able to hold significant amounts of data, management and IT teams are unable to predict what level of use the servers will see on a moment to moment basis. This means that while all of a company’s data may be easily stored in one place, accessing it all at one time will lead to significant slowdown and an overburdening of the system.
One option to solve this problem is to use a software-based approach and virtualize storage assets as well as servers and desktops and link the two in order to prevent front-loading traffic into the storage system and bogging down response time. Using software to modify the resources already in place allows companies to smooth out I/O issues that come along with newly created servers and limit the amount of slowdown and possible downtime associated with new virtual servers that do not have proper storage and access separation protocols in place.
