More and more companies are making the switch, at least in part, to virtual server technology, and according to Gartner, 1 in 4 server workloads currently in the industry will be virtual before the year is out. For consumers, this move to the virtual represents a better way to do business, a way to lose the hardware and still retain access to all of their data, while also putting all of their information into one large, accessible space. Unfortunately, even VPS options have limits and the most important of these currently plaguing providers is the varying need for server capacity.
The nature of a VPS machine is that it acts as though every partitioned server on it is the only one in existence. This means that the hypervisor is naturally ignorant of what is going on overall and doesn’t know how much total capacity is being used at any given time. If a company’s website experiences a sudden traffic spike or their database a sudden use jump, they can slow down the server for everyone on it as the capacity dwindles to nothing.
New methods are being developed to combat this problem, the first of which is the ability to spool up new servers on demand as spikes happen and companies use more space. As well, many providers are working on ways to make servers “smarter” and let them predict when a company will need extra capacity. A chocolate company, for example, would find themselves with more capacity around Valentine’s Day than during the middle of March in an effort to ensure that their volume of traffic does not cause the server to collapse. Though the capacity issue remains a challenge, solutions are in the works to properly address it.
