Virtualized Servers Require Real Security

January 31, 2011

in VPS Security

Virtualization is becoming more and more commonplace as businesses realize the benefits of storing data in an off-site location, as well as the advantages of being able to run more than one OS or suite of applications from the same server, each with its down individualized VPS. This larger migration, however, means that opportunities for hacked and stolen data are increasing as high-tech criminals also become aware of this shift.

Standard server protection procedures are not as effective in the new virtual environment as in a physical one, however, and new methods must be used in order to keep data safe. While virtualized servers do require a physical space to operate, accessing data from the servers can be done from any location in the world with the right permissions. This means that security solutions for VPS and cloud computing systems must focus on migrating profiles, multiple user access and continuous uptime. This is in order to ensure that not only are the right users the ones operating in the virtual environment, but that the server is continually up and being monitored for any security threats.

Virtual security is evolving along with the technology itself which means that there are not yet any hard and fast rules when it comes to the VPS security world. In order to be secure and stay in front of information criminals, however, companies must ensure that virtualized security is a priority rather than an afterthought. Without dedicated security services, data can easily be accessed or corrupted and no one in the company may be aware. By budgeting for enhanced virtual security and understanding how it differs from standard physical server protection, a company will find themselves in a more secure position as the market moves forward.
