Adding Users to SharePoint

To add new users for your SharePoint site, you can follow these steps.

  1. Log into your control panel at https://support.myhosting.com
  2. Click on SharePoint
  3. Click on Manage Accounts
  4. Under your SharePoint domain, click on Add a user
  5. In the fields provided choose a username, password and display name, and click Continue to complete the process. (Please note, the user you create is not an email account. The username appears in the format of an email account but technically does not have a mailbox unless you add an Exchange Mailbox for the user).
  6. It will take a few moments for the user to be created on the server. Please do not click Continue more than once.
  7. Once the user is created, you should see a link stating: "Click Here for instructions on how to give SharePoint site permission to this user." Follow that link and complete the instructions listed there to add the user to your site.

If you have a Hosted Exchange Email account associated with your SharePoint Services site, you can add these Exchange users to your SharePoint Site right away. For instructions on how to add the user to your SharePoint site, click on the SharePoint tab then click Manage Accounts. Then you can click on the Go link to the right of the user you want to add, and click on SharePoint Information for instructions on adding the user to your SharePoint Services site.

Removing Users from SharePoint

When you remove a user from your SharePoint 3.0 site, you can follow these steps:

  1. Open a browser and go to your SharePoint Services site. When prompted, login as a user with Administrator permissions. For example, you can log in as the WSSAdmin user. (The username will be in the format of WSSAdmin@your-domain.com where your-domain.com is your actual domain name.)
  2. Once you have logged in, from the Site Actions menu select Site Settings
  3. Under Users and Permissions click on People and groups
  4. Select the user(s) you want to remove from your site and from the Actions menu select Delete Users from Site Collection
  5. The user will no longer be able to access your SharePoint Services site.

If you want to delete the user entirely, you can follow these additional steps.

  1. Log into your control panel at https://support.myhosting.com
  2. Click on SharePoint
  3. Click on Manage Accounts
  4. Under Manage Account click on Go beside the user you wish to remove.
  5. Click Delete Account and then select the Delete Account button.
  6. The user will no longer be listed under your domain

Site Collection Administrator

Even though a SharePoint User may be as an Administrator, they will not have permission to access Site Collection options in your SharePoint Site. To allow site collection access to a user, you will need to log in with your "WSSAdmin" user, which was created when your account was first activated. Please refer to the email which was sent to you when your account was first activated to confirm the username and password. Follow these steps to grant a user Site Collection Administration permission:

  1. Log in to your SharePoint Site as the WSSAdmin user
  2. From the Site Actions menu select Site Settings
  3. Under Users and Permissions click on Site collection administrators
  4. Type in the username of the other person you want to make a site collection administrator. You can separate multiple usernames with a semi-colon.
  5. Click on the 'Check Names' icon to confirm that you've entered the username(s) correctly.
  6. Click OK to finalize your changes.

The user is now a Site Collection Administrator and will now have permission to access any administration area of your SharePoint site.

It is recommended that you grant this type of permission with caution, as a Site Collection Administrator will be able to delete any page, sub-site, document, workspace, list or document library that they wish, as well as access and modify the site with SharePoint Designer.
