Database Management

Goal

A common tool for running a website is a database.  We provide two types of databases for our clients: a MSSQL database, and a MySQL database.  Please note we only provide one MySQL database; if you need to use the database for more applications, please use a unique prefix in order to segregate the databases. This will be covered in more details later.

Creating MsSQL database

First log in to your Control Panel at http://manage.myhosting.com and select your subscription from the drop-down list on the top right.

Once logged in, click on the black More Services tab up top.

There, you can click the Databases button in order to view all databases you currently have.

You will see a list of your databases if you currently have any.

Now if you want to create a new one, simply click on the Add New Database button up top.  You will be presented with a drop-down list of database types you can create.

If you do not see MSSQL as an option, you will need to add the resource. To do this click on the black Account tab up top

There, click on Buy Additional Resource to see a list of your current subscriptions. Put the check in the subscription you need to add a MSSQL database on, and click Next. There under Web Hosting Add-Ons you will see Microsoft SQL 2005 Database (100MB) set to Off.

Change this value to On, and click Next at the bottom of the page. You will see an updated invoice; simply choose Place Order when done. After 15 mins, try the steps above again to add the MSSQL database.

Click Next and fill out the basic information for the database you wish to create.

Once you are completed simply click on Finish.

Manage SQL server

To manage a MSSQL or MySQL server, return to More Services and you will see the list of the databases you have with us. Simply click the link name to see the details of the database. Use the Browser database manager to open the web tool for your database.

Conclusion

The database is a very powerful tool for storing and managing data.  Databases are now a must in the industry because most web applications will not function without them. Knowing how to manage them is not necessary as the applications will use them, but knowing how to access them and make minor changes is handy.
